About the artist

Nicklas Kristiansen is an abstract artist from Stockholm. He started painting during his parental leave and found an unexpected interest in combining color and form. Since then, more and more people have discovered his large colorful abstract acrylic paintings.

Nicklas paints abstract art in a handful of different styles and new techniques are developed as time goes by. "The great thing about abstract art or abstract expressionism is that you can experiment during the creative process with unexpected results. A painting can sometimes be repainted a few times before you are completely satisfied. This gives the painting personality, depth and structure. Sometimes you get stuck and have to put the painting on break, but even the most unsuccessful paintings can sometimes become the absolute best.. ”

Nicklas is represented by NYagallery in New York where more of his works are available.

What is abstract art, abstract expressionism and contemporary art?

Abstracte.gpREZionism

This movement originated in America in the 1940s and became popular in the 1950s. Expressionism can be summarized in two main points: freedom in expression and the quest to explore the subconscious. A group of American artists were interested in a way of working that could visualize the expression of the subconscious directly on the canvas. Many artists associated with this art direction worked quickly and painted using unconventional methods, such as pouring or sprinkling paint directly onto the surface, so chance and accident would play a significant role in creation. Abstract Expressionism was officially recognized in 1951 through an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, called "Abstract Painting and Sculpture in America". Examples: Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt

.

Abstract art

Abstract art – that does not imitate or directly depict external reality, with an emphasis on personal expression. Some limit the term to only non-figurative art, where no figures or recognizable motifs appear. Behind all abstract art is the idea that form and color in themselves can influence the viewer to be without imaginative content, e.g. figures or landscapes. Often exaggerated or simplified until they become almost unrecognizable. Cubism – the first abstract art style of the 20th century.

Contemporary Art

Contemporary art or scontemporary art is today's art, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse and technologically evolving world. Their art is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts and subjects that continues the challenging of boundaries that was already underway in the 20th century. Diversity and eclectic contemporary art as a whole is characterized by the very lack of a unified, organizing principle, ideology or "-ism". Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that touches on larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community and nationality.

In English, modern and contemporary are synonyms, resulting in some confusion and confusion of the terms modern art and contemporary art by non-specialists.
